This write-up is an amalgamation of all the info that has been posted so far on this thread (and now from the second thread) at the message boards at EQTraders.com, where the ongoing investigation is based. It contains almost no information that I obtained myself, beyond the initial hail text for the guard in Freeport and the first quest text of the Oracle. The rest is assembled from the various reports presented there, and reported to me via email or tells. The Tradeskill section is lifted pretty much wholesale from Kaysha Soulsinger's post, then edited and updated. The Shopping List is adapted from Gneville's Phylactery Writeup, which in turn was based on this document. The Appendix on the Book of Turmoil quest was adapted from Pahpah Behr's post on the EQTraders message boards.

This write-up will be updated as new info becomes available; note the date and time at the top to ensure you have the most recent copy.  Updates have slowed WAY down as the only information still missing is exact item trivials and what to do with the Mana Crystals.

I've also had requests from people asking whether they can post it on their site or mirror it. I don't mind you reposting this write-up on your own site or pointing to it. I'd just ask that you keep my name and email, the last updated date and time, and the links to EQTraders and the message board threads intact. If you do decide to mirror this write-up on a public site, please send me an email so I can add you to the list of mirror sites.

Summary

This quest was added with the Oct. 9, 2003 patch to coincide with the release of the Tower of Solusek Ro book for the pen-and-paper EverQuest RPG. There are no clues on how to start the quest in-game; you need to read the RPG books to find that. The key phrase below and who to talk to are from the book.

Find Sir Artanis in North Freeport or Qrixat Du`voy in the Cleric Guild in Neriak's Third Gate, and say to him or her, "I received your summons". You will receive a note to take to the Oracle of K'arnon in the Ocean of Tears. The Oracle will send you after six books, one after the other, which you hand in to Assistant Jeyular (who stands next to the Oracle). Although there are no explicit flags on completing each step of the quest, you cannot do the steps out of order. You must turn in all six books, in order.

After turning in the last book, you receive a Token of Service. Take the Token to Raotin Teawel in the Ocean of Tears along with an INT-caster or priest-class breastplate from Thurgadin, Kael Drakkel, or Skyshrine and hand both in. You will receive a Grand Robe of the Oracle or a Grand Tunic of the Oracle, depending on your class. Melee and hybrid classes apparently receive nothing.

When you hand each book in to the Assistant, you also receive a component that can be used in tradeskills to make a subcombine for the Phylactery. The six subcombines are then combined in the quest container to make the Phylactery. You can also hand the Phylactery to the Assistant to receive a Dark Phylactery.

You also receive Mana Crystals when you make the Phylactery, the use of which is unknown at this time.

Starting the Quest

Beginning of quest (good version)

Find Sir Artanis in North Freeport (he's a normal guard who wanders near the Knights of Truth building -- the Paladin guild house) and say 'I received your summons.' We've had at least two incidents where people who claimed that the phrase didn't work were in fact just spelling it wrong, so be sure to double-check your spelling.

You say, 'Hail, Sir Artanis'

You say, 'I received your summons'

Sir Artanis says ''Yes _________, thank you for responding with such haste. The Knights of Marr recently captured a Teir'Dal wizard who under intense questioning revealed a variety of disturbing matters. First, he worships Solusek Ro, which is no crime, but considering the nearby temple's past associations with the Burning Dead, specifically Marnek about whom you recently delivered revelations, then his other information seems even more dire. Secondly, he has admitted that he was in Freeport attempting to contact the leaders of the Dismal Rage for he understood that they have nearly completed a phylactery, a device that holds the mortal soul of a lich. In light of this, we ask that you visit the Oracle of K'Arnon in the Ocean of Tears to learn whatever you can about the nature of these phylacteries, including the means to create one so that we better know how to destroy them. This letter will serve as proof that you come in the name of the Knights of Marr.''

Beginning of quest (evil version)

Find Qrixat Du`voy in the Cleric Guild in Neriak's Third Gate. She's in the room directly across from the merchant that sells hate stones, next to High Priestess Alexandria. Say 'I received your summons.'

You say, 'I received your summons'

Qrixat Du`voy says ''You have performed admirably in the past, so I shall overlook your tardiness responding to my call. One of our own has heeded the call of Solusek Ro over that of Innoruuk and is conspiring with that other traitorous cur, Opal Dark Briar. The wizard Salarz is a Teir'Dal now in the hands of the Knights of Marr in Freeport, but we have good information connecting him with the Dismal Rage and the Temple of Solusek Ro in a plot to create a phylactery. Somehow, this is connected to the news you brought from Befallen about the resurrection of Marnek. One who might know the answer is the oracle in the Ocean of Tears. Seek him out and learn what is required to create a phylactery so that we will remain one step ahead of any others. Go now and take this letter for the oracle with you!''

Meet the Oracle

Either way, you receive a note. Read it for fun; it makes no sense how it fits in with this story line. :-) (On an related note, someone mentioned that the text of the note is in fact a copy of a different note you'd get when doing the shadowknight epic. No, you cannot use this quest note for the SK epic. :-)

Take the note to the Oracle of K'arnon in the Ocean of Tears (loc -500, -8800, just south of the docks at Sister Island).

You say, 'Hail, Oracle of K`Arnon'

Oracle of K`Arnon says 'Greetings, _________, I am the Oracle of K'Arnon. Do you quest for [knowledge] yourself, or do you offer that which I [seek]?'

Following the text prompts leads to existing (and irrelevant) quests. Hand in the Note.

Oracle of K`Arnon says ''You walk a dangerous path if you seek to construct a phylactery. I can indeed assist you, but you must both pay my price of knowledge for knowledge and prove to me that you are capable of controlling the forces you might unleash. I seek six volumes of magical power and knowledge that are spread across the commonly known lands of Norrath and even beyond, in the planes. For each you bring me I shall instruct you on the next step in the process and provide you with one of the required pieces. Completing each step will require acquiring even more items. The process is time-consuming, but the power of a phylactery is such that it will benefit even a bearer who does not aspire to lichdom. When you are certain you are ready to begin, talk to my assistant, Jeyular and hand him. . . hmmm, where shall we start? I think it would be fitting to begin with a tome by the great lich himself, Miragul.'

He will send you to fetch him a book and ask you to give it to his Assistant. Each time you bring back a book, the Assistant requests another, for a total of six books. At each stage, the Assistant also gives you a no-drop tradeskill component. These components are used to construct a Phylactery, described in the Tradeskill Combines section below.

Hand-in Text

After the Tome of Miragul

Assistant Jeyular says 'An auspicious beginning. To reward your start, I will enlighten you with the secret of palatable mana, which is required to create a phylactery, but also has independent uses as well. Brew it like wine, but include a vial of mana as created by the ablest enchanters plus a pinch of this special sugar as well as grapes that can be grown only by the halflings of Rivervale. When you are ready to continue with the next step, return with the history of the Di`Zok and give it to me.'

You receive a Sea-Foam Sugar.

After the History of the Di`Zok

Assistant Jeyular says 'Excellent work. This book is not easily come by. This next step is the first of creating components for the phylactery iteself, the silk insert. This is the base inside of the box and it must be made of durable stone silk to withstand the energies within a phylactery. When you are ready to continue with the next step, return the long-lost Journal of Aataltaal to me. His tomb is rumored to be in the Hills of Shade, and while I doubt this is true, rumor depends on some truths so somewhere nearby is where to discover this book.'

You receive an Insert Pattern.

After the Journal of Aataltaal

Assistant Jeyular says 'Impressive, young one. I truly did not believe you would locate this volume. My instructions for constructing a phylactery shall continue. The third step requires the construction of the soul net -- the silken binding for inside the lid of the phylactery. This requires delicate and balanced threading that only the ablest fletchers can perform. To create this mystic mesh, you'll need the silk of a spider that itself deals with the immaterial as well as shadewood clips to attach the soul net to the lid of the phylactery. You must also use the glue I have given to you. When you are ready to continue, bring the book guarded by yet another spider, this one found in the Planes of Power.'

You receive an Incorporeal Bond.

After the Firebone Notebook

Assistant Jeyular says 'My, my, you are serious about this effort, aren't you? This book is a excellent find from the Planes of Power and has earned you instructions for the fourth step in the process of creating a phylactery. A spellcaster may willingly give his soul to a phylactery to become a lich, but the process will not hold unless the phylactery can keep hold of the soul. The net snatches it, but a crucible of containment secures it. This sketch will help you get started, then you need merely follow similar, well-documented methods such as are used for a Crucible of Escape. The modifications should be obvious to one as talented as yourself. Also, the penultimate book I require is a bloody tome from Antonica.'

You receive a Crucible Sketch.

After the Sanguine Tome

Assistant Jeyular says 'Thank you for this addition to my library. You're drawing close to the end of your quest. Only two more steps to complete and you will be glad to hear they are no more complicated than the first ones. The lids of the phylactery must be hinged and as no portion of the item can be of ordinary manufacture. You must fashion clasps of sealing. This mold will help you, but the Velium bits used must be enchanted and combined with a seemingly mundane object that yet holds great powers over the soul of an undead and weighs it down, anchoring it to this world. Undead elves especially are held here in this way. The results are then carefully filed smooth. Finally, the volume I require from you in exchange for the last information you require is the spellbook of the greatest living wizard on Velious.'

You receive a Clasp Mold.

After Velketor's Spell Book

Assistant Jeyular says 'I am impressed by your efforts. The deeds are truly no less outstanding than my own when I stole into Miragul's Menagerie and stole a most unique tome and learned much of what I am passing along to you. The last step required of you will demand as much attention as all the prior travels and efforts to this point. Here is a decorated box I found in Miragul's laboratory that will form the substance of your phylactery. Once you have acquired and lacquered a precious garnet with the blood of a vampire, then apply the garnet and the five other pieces you've created to the decorated box and you'll have your prize. But remember, a precious garnet can be gained only from a god. As I find it unlikely you shall succeed in crafting a phylactery, and despite my payment in advice, allow me to thank you for your services in another [way].'

You receive a Decorated Box and a Token of Service.

You say, 'What way?'

Assistant Jeyular says ''Look for Raotin Teawel, I believe he can be found on an island somewhere nearby where you would acquire a robe or tunic of Kael, Skyshrine or Thurgadin manufacture. Take one of those items and my token of service when you are ready and he shall share with you his newest creation, a robe or tunic of great power. If you are not satisfied with your robe or tunic, hand it to the Guardian of K'Arnon and he will exchange it for you.''

Robe / Tunic Turn-in

Raotin Teawel says ''Your promised reward.''

You receive a Grand Robe of the Oracle or a Grand Tunic of the Oracle.  If you receive the incorrect item for whatever reason, you can hand it in to the Guardian of K'arnon and get the other one back.  You may swap back and forth between the two at any time, though obviously, there is no reason to do so once you have the correct item for your class.

Phylactery Turn-in

Handing in your Phylactery

Assistant Jeyular says 'Excellent work. There is only one slight error that I have now corrected for you.'

You get back a Dark Phylactery.

Handing in your Dark Phylactery

Assistant Jeyular says 'Ah, you wish to perform your own alterations? Very well.'

You get back a Phylactery.

Sub-quests

Moon-Harvested Grapes

The halfling you need is called "epicurean halfling". You can find him outside the wall in Misty Thicket, just walk through the gate when coming from Rivervale and turn right. He is standing at loc 885, 85.

This portion was successfully completed by multiple Dark Elves with "no special factions" or who were explicitly KOS to halflings, so it appears that anyone can do this step. I also personally verified this. The epicurean halfling conned indifferent to a dark elf cleric of Innoruuk, and amiably to me, a human paladin (which is confusing, as my factions in Rivervale are ally with the guards and apprehensive with all others). Naturally, guards and other halflings in the vicinity could still present problems if you're KoS.

You say, 'Hail, epicurean halfling'

epicurean halfling says ''Hmmm. . . What? Oh sorry, I was snoozing. I was up throughout last night harvesting my [grapes] by the light of the moon.''

You say, 'What about your grapes?'

epicurean halfling says ''Why, my magic moon-harvested grapes, of course. I will give you some to sample if you would [help] me.''

You say, 'What help do you need?'

epicurean halfling says ''The specially-prepared soil that grows the vines for my grapes is becoming muddy again. I need more of the magical sand from the deserts of Ro to mix with my soil. Bring me that and I will give you some grapes.''

Hand him a Sands of Ro.

epicurean halfling says ''Thank you so much. Here are the grapes I promised you. They may not look like much, but master brewers tell me they are required for many magical wines, including some sought by the most powerful magic-workers.''

Receive Moon-Harvested Grapes

The above text is only given during the daytime. If it's night and you hail him, he will say the following:

epicurean halfling says ''Sorry, but I do not have time to talk right now as I my grapes are ready and I must harvest them by the light of the moon.''

You can still hand him the Sands, though, and still get the Grapes.

Obtaining the Robe / Tunic

When you turn in all six books to Assistant Jeyular, you receive:

Token of Service
LORE ITEM NO DROP
WT: 0.4 Size: TINY
Class: ALL
Race: ALL

Head to Raotin Teawel, a halfling on Aviak Island in the Ocean of Tears, loc +2190, +4238. Give him your Velious chest item (Thurgadin, Kael Drakkel, or Skyshrine) and the Token of Service. You receive a Grand Robe of the Oracle (INT casters) or a Grand Tunic of the Oracle (WIS casters).

Previously, the hand-in was bugged, and you could get the wrong item. In the patch notes for November 5, 2003, though, you could find this little tidbit:

- Raotin Teawel will always give out the correct robe for completion of his quest.

Based on results reported at EQTraders, it appears that Raotin will hand you the Robe or Tunic based on your class. If you somehow get the wrong item, you can hand it in to the Guardian of K'arnon and get the other one in return.

A ranger tried handing in a druid breastplate to Raotin and got nothing back; a wizard turned in a cleric breastplate and got back the Robe; a cleric who turned in a cleric breastplate got back the Tunic; a druid turned in a mage chest item and got back the Tunic (an actual mage would have gotten the Robe).

When another druid turned in a Warrior breastplate, he had it handed back to him; this suggests that Raotin will only accept breastplates for NEC, WIZ, MAG, ENC, CLR, DRU, or SHM.

Based on the quest text and the examples above, it's probable that melee and hybrid classes do not receive a reward if they turn in any breastplate. However, this has not yet been thoroughly tested.

Chest items from the Plane of Growth are returned with the standard "I do not need this" message, so they cannot be used.

Augmentations on the chest item you hand in don't affect the turn-in; they'll be accepted just fine. Note that you lose the bonded augmentations along with the chest item. The Grand Robe and Grand Tunic originally didn't have augmentation slots, but a Type 7 slot was added to each around the end of April 2004.

If for some reason you need another Token of Service, you can hand in a second Velketor's Spellbook to the Assistant again. This only works if you have previously turned in all six books.

Multiquesting the Robe / Tunic

Due to changes made with the November 5, 2003 patch, it may no longer be possible to MQ the Robe or Tunic. All the reports thus far suggest that an MQ is no longer possible. Raotin either says, "Your promised reward" and hands back nothing, or he simply eats the items with no messages and no reward for either person.

One report of an MQ attempt is rather interesting. A druid turned in a druid BP, then a cleric turned in a Token of Service. Neither got a Tunic. The cleric then obtained a shaman BP and returned to Raotin some four hours later. Raotin ate the BP without handing back anything. This suggests one of two things. Either Raotin got reset during the intervening four hours (which could happen due to someone else completing the quest, or because every so often he "forgets" what incomplete quest hand-ins have been done); or else Raotin will only give out the Robe / Tunic when both the Token and the BP are handed to him at the same time by the same person.

Be aware that GM's will normally not restore items lost due to a failed MQ. Attempt at your own risk.

The Phylactery cannot be MQ'ed since it is a tradeskill combine with no-drop components.

If you are KOS to the Oracle

Both the Oracle of K'arnon and Assistant Jeyular are on the "Oracle of Karnon" faction. If you've ruined your Oracle faction by farming his robe in the past, you can still complete this quest. Charming the Oracle does allow you to turn in the initial note.

According to a report by Linarae on Allakhazam's, Assistant Jeyular can be neither charmed nor mezzed. However, based on other reports, it appears that you can do the turn-in as follows. First, pacify the Oracle, the Assistant, and the Guardian using a spell such as Pacify, Pacification, Harmony, etc., to prevent them from attacking. From maximum range, click the book you wish to turn in on the Assistant, but do not click GIVE. Once the trade window is open, have someone cast invisibility on you, or try sneak/hide if you have the appropriate skills. If this works, the Assistant should now con indifferent to you. Now click GIVE, and he will accept the book and hand you the tradeskill component.

You can raise your Oracle faction by doing the Book of Turmoil quest; additional information can also be found in the Appendix below.

The Stone Silks drop from the Stone Spider, a named mob in Sol B (officially called Nagafen's Lair). The spider has a placeholder, and respawn time is 24 minutes. Reportedly, there is a 50/50 chance that the Stone Spider or a PH will pop each time. The Stone Spider doesn't always drop the Silk. The mob is very highly resistant, maybe even totally resistant, to root (and probably snare as well) and runs away to the nearest Sol A (Solusek's Eye) zone line at around 20% life. The Spider has very high magic resist, "decent" fire resist, and low cold resist (which makes sense, given the environment). More info on the Spider's resists from the Illia's Everquest Bestiary entry: "He is perfectly suseptible to both cold and poison based attacks. The Spiritual Anchor drops from Ghoul of Takish-Hiz, which can spawn in North Ro, the Oasis of Marr, or South Ro. He probably has placeholders (although they're not identified yet), roams, and is undead. He does not always drop the quest item. He cannot be snared or rooted and has a very fast hit point regen, but has less than 3500 hit points in total. We have two possible spawn points for him noted in South Ro, at + 51, + 843 and at + 370, 0. Additional spawn points may also exist. Spawn points in Oasis and North Ro are not yet known. Respawn time appears to be about five minutes, though again, a PH may spawn instead.

A note of warning. Apparently, when the Ghoul spawns in South Ro, he is attacked and killed by the dark-elf merchants (or maybe he attacks the merchants first) if he wanders near the tents. This is similar to how the merchants react to sand giants and the Ancient Cyclops in the zone.

For the curious, here's the Ghoul's attack message.

Ghoul of Takish-Hiz says, "Run, run far from these lands. For while unstoppable here, I am bound by an item of my past to never leave this land where once stood a great forest."

Notes: The Precious Garnet drops from the Allizewsaur in Ocean of Tears.

There is one report that this combine does not require a Jar of Lacquer, but we don't know which container was used. All other reports say that the Lacquer is required, in all containers tested.

According to the map text for Castle Mistmoore on EQAtlas.com, the Vial of Vampire Blood drops off of A Glyphed Ghoul in the graveyard or near the lake area. Apparently any mob with "familiar" or "glyph" in the name outside the castle proper can be a PH for the Ghoul, so you may wish to focus on the outside of the castle, around the graveyard and the lake.

Step 7 - The Phylactery

Container: CLOSED

Notes: The Phylactery has been made successfully using all five types of mana -- Viscous, Cloudy, Clear, Distilled, and Purified palatable mana.

The number of charges on the mana vial doesn't matter, so you can use it for the buff, then use the zero-charge vial for the Phylactery if you wish. The buff will last until you die, get dispelled, or click it off.

You can hand in your Phylactery to Assistant Jeyular and receive a Dark Phylactery. If you hand in the Dark Phylactery, the Assistant gives you back the original Phylactery.

Additionally, there is no known use for the Mana Crystals as of yet. The Mana Crystals and the Phylactery did not combine in any tradeskill container.

Appendix 1: Book of Turmoil Quest

The Oracle of K'arnon is on his own personal faction (Oracle of Karnon). Assistant Jeyular and the Guardian of K'arnon are also on this faction. The only known way to raise his faction is by doing the Book of Turmoil quest.

Getting the Book of Turmoil

The quest information on Allakhazam's is either incorrect or incomplete. The following steps are all that you need:

  1. Get a few stacks of Red Wine. (Yes, any red wine will do)
  2. Go to Lokar To'Biath in Neriak 3rd Gate, Library, left side.
  3. Feed him red wine, four at a time, unstacked, until you max out Dark Bargainer faction.
  4. Give him 7pp, or 70gp, or 700sp, or 7,000cp. (Confirmed them all)
  5. Kill Lokar, loot his head.
  6. Go to Rysva To'Biath in Neriak Commons, Blind Fish, bottom floor.
  7. Buy one more stack of red wine.
  8. Give Rysva the note from Lokar and you'll get a new one back.
  9. Give Rysva the new note and Lokar's head and get a Book of Turmoil.
  10. Go back to step 2 and repeat.

You can get as many books as you have slots for; they are not LORE.

Lokar has a respawn of 6 mins. Works out perfectly to feed, kill, run to his sister, and come back for another kill.

Turning the Books of Turmoil In to the Oracle

You will need at least an invis caster for this, recommended enchanter for REALLY bad faction.

  1. Have the enchanter pacify the Oracle.
  2. Initiate the trade with the Oracle.
  3. Have your partner cast Invisibility you. You can also use Sneak/Hide if you have the appropriate skill.
  4. Click Give.
  5. You will receive a Glowing Torch, positive faction with the Oracle of Karnon, and negative faction with the Oracle of Maraud. But who cares about him, he doesn't give out a cool robe. (Also, no one has yet found this other oracle!)
  6. Rinse and repeat from step 1.

Note that if you charm the Oracle, you do not get faction hits. Instead, you need to pacify him (using spells like Pacify, Pacification, Wake of Tranquility, Harmony, etc.), click the book on him to start the trade, get yourself invisible (or sneak/hide), then click the trade button. Be aware that it will take a LOT of book turn-ins to get your faction to non-KOS. You can turn in up to four books at once, unstacked.
